In one of my favourite games you could just pick up stuff with your left mouse button. You could actually do almost anything with left mouse button, even riding a bike. Which was so great, because I point at whatever it is with my mouse anyway, and then I just click - either short or longer. Have only seen that in one game so far.

If you set them to use both, but only provide one then the other is missing and the warning will be shown. Make sure the well storage has empty buckets. If the resource storage has empty buckets return them to the well storage. Also assigned the worker in the well to collect buckets of water. The range between everything (house, workplace, ressources) doesn´t matter. You can build your excavation shed in on corner of the map far away of every stone and clay, their living houses in another corner and the storages in another corner.
