How much hp can a stock 4l80e handle.
My question is what will a 12 bolt need to handle up to say 700-800 hp. Can a posi handle that or will I need to run a spool etc. Currently I am running a 10 bolt with a spool, strange axles and just shy of 500 hp 408 small block with a powerglide. The spool has been fine other than dragging the tires around corners.
I doubt anyone can really give you a definative answer on how much power the E40D will handle other than the factory rating. I believe it is 900ft lbs. But this is the torque that the tranny is rated to handle not your motor torque. About 400-450 HP/TQ is the limit on the stock TH400. It's not always the HP that kills them, it is the torque, car weight, how hard the car leaves and rear gearing.At 8,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, the 4L80E’s capacity is greater than the smaller 4L60E’s. As a result, the 4L80E is a completely different transmission and doesn’t share anything in common with the 4L60E. What’s more, it can handle 440 lb-ft of torque in factory form, and a whole lot more with a Hughes Performance build.
The 4L80E is it's direct descendant. Stock 4L80E's benefit from 40+ extra years of research and development. They also benefit from not being so old. There are very few clean Th400 transmissions that have never been rebuilt. Whereas there are great 4L80E's are readily available at the local wrecking yard or on Craigslist.

You will be perfectly fine with stage two's which are around 140+HP. Your stock turbo will only be in the 35-38 psi range with those sticks. Your usually good till 40+ psi.
